Which knock IC to choose?

Post by DonP » 02 Jul 2020 13:47

Hello,

When selecting the Knock Shield for Arduino for purchase, there is a choice between either the Texas Instruments TPIC8101 or the Renesas HIP9011 knock IC.

Are these identical or are there pros & cons to each? If the latter, what would they be?

Many thanks for offering these Arduino shields!

DonP

Hello DonP, thank you for liking our shields!

The Renesas, previously Intersil HIP9011 is the original IC, Texas Instruments developed the TPIC8101 as a compatible IC.

With the shield you will not find any advantage or disadvantage between them in my experience. However there is a minor improvement on the TPIC8101, it has a build in ADC (8.4.5 in the data sheet) which means you can actually operate it only over SPI. So there is a slight advantage for the TPIC8101 which is the most commonly used IC.
